SECOND TRIO: Piece for Stefan Wolpe, was written between 27 November and 26 December 1962, and was composed in observance of Stefan Wolpe's Sixtieth Anniversary. The work is dedicated to Wolpe a composer Wuorinen has admired and whose music he has championed. The Second Trio was premiered on 6 May 1963, with Harvey Sollberger, flute, Joel Krosnick cello and Wuorinen at the keyboard.
